Behind Weaponization of Religion
Monday Nov 10, 2025
Monday Nov 10, 2025
In this episode with Jay Bohanon, we follow his journey through religion and how curiosity shaped his mission to help people understand different beliefs without fear or judgment. We discuss the weaponization of religion, the impact of interpretation on beliefs, and how understanding others’ perspectives fosters connection and grace. Jay also shares his love for Kansas, lessons from his travels, and the power of treating everyone with empathy, even when viewpoints differ. Tune in to see how curiosity, compassion, and connection can transform how we understand religion, culture, and the world.
Key Takeaways:
Curiosity is the foundation of growth – Asking questions early teaches you to seek answers and understand the world. When adults don’t have the answer, looking for information in books or other sources helps you learn on your own and build confidence.
Religion and beliefs are often more similar than different – Despite diverse practices, many religions share foundational principles such as values, morality, and community. Recognizing similarities allows for empathy, reduces fear of “otherness,” and promotes connection across cultural or spiritual differences.
Different paths can lead to the same truth – People may practice their beliefs in different ways, but at the core, many religions share similar values. Understanding this helps you focus on your own personal spirituality rather than getting stuck on differences.
Passion grows from early experiences – Developing a deep love or commitment often starts in childhood through exposure and meaningful experiences. Early engagement, whether through family, school, or community traditions, can ignite a lifelong passion to represent, improve, or change the perception of something important to you.
Values and Identity Evolve Over Time – Our values and sense of self are not fixed. They change as our lives, experiences, and priorities shift. What mattered in one season may not matter in the next. Allowing ourselves grace to evolve helps us grow, connect with others, and resist rigid systems that try to control or limit personal growth.
Helpful Resources:
Be aware of how religion can be used for control – Organized religion can sometimes shift from its original teachings and be used to wield power over people. Understanding that interpretations, traditions, and texts can be manipulated helps you critically examine beliefs and recognize when dogma is being weaponized rather than guiding genuine spiritual growth.
Culture and religion are deeply intertwined – Cultural context shapes the interpretation and practice of religion. Many conflicts or misunderstandings attributed to faith are actually rooted in culture rather than core spiritual teachings. Distinguishing between the two can clarify misconceptions and reduce unnecessary division.
Focus on Shared Humanity to Bridge Divides – Changing harmful uses of religion or beliefs doesn’t come from arguing or proving someone wrong. It starts by seeing others as people, showing grace, and building genuine connections. By finding common values and what everyone truly wants, we can work together and create understanding over time.

What began as a family adventure turned into a deeper exploration of how our beliefs, expectations, and communication patterns shape our experiences. From missed trains to meaningful encounters with strangers, each detour revealed something powerful about flexibility, discovery, and the importance of letting go of rigidity in order to find freedom.
In this episode, I share reflections from my recent trip to Japan and the unexpected lessons that came from getting lost, literally and figuratively. Together, we uncover how “being lost” can transform into an opportunity for growth, in our travels, our relationships, and our communication. Tune in to learn how curiosity and openness can turn uncertainty into clarity, and how getting lost might just be the path to finding your way.
Key Takeaways:
Lost Can Be the Lesson – Getting lost is often seen as failure, but it can be one of life’s greatest teachers. When the path we expect suddenly changes, we are given a chance to slow down, observe, and understand more deeply what surrounds us. Losing direction can shift our focus from reaching a destination to appreciating the process itself.
Challenging Expectations – Expectations shape how we experience the world, but they can also blind us to what is actually unfolding. When reality does not align with what we imagined, it can reveal the biases and assumptions that quietly guide our thoughts.
Discovery Through Getting Lost – Getting lost challenges the need for certainty. It invites us to be flexible, to adapt, and to find our footing in unfamiliar territory. When we stop resisting and begin to explore, we learn that not every moment needs to be perfectly directed. The openness that comes from being lost encourages creativity, curiosity, and a renewed sense of trust in the unfolding process.
Finding Wonder in the Unexpected – Frustration often marks the beginning of discovery. What starts as inconvenience can become an opportunity to witness beauty we might have overlooked. When we release the need for everything to go as planned, we begin to notice details that spark joy.
Communication as Exploration – In conversation, being “lost” can feel uncomfortable, but it also opens the door to deeper understanding. When we stop striving for perfection in what we say or hear, we begin to listen with curiosity instead of fear. This mindset transforms communication into a shared exploration rather than a performance.
Helpful Resources:
Exploring Beyond Comfort – When conversations or circumstances feel unstable, the instinct is often to retreat. But stepping forward instead can lead to discovery and greater understanding. By leaning into curiosity rather than control, we learn to see discomfort not as a threat but as an invitation to stretch beyond what feels familiar.
Transforming Communication and Culture – When communication is built on psychological safety and mutual respect, it strengthens both relationships and systems. Every conversation has the potential to restore connection, repair misunderstanding, and cultivate belonging. True transformation begins when communication becomes a tool for healing and shared purpose.

Behind Bridge Building with Wade Hinton
Monday Oct 27, 2025
Monday Oct 27, 2025
In this episode with Wade Hinton, we explore the art of bridge building and leading through values. Wade explains why organizational values often look good on paper but fail in practice, and how leaders can bridge the gap with authenticity, curiosity, and alignment. We discuss the importance of transparency, empathy, and active listening, showing how these skills strengthen both organizational culture and personal relationships at home and in communities.
Key Takeaways:
Bridge building starts with understanding others – You don’t have to agree with everyone to work well with them. What matters is taking the time to understand how they see the world and what matters to them. Empathy is about listening without judgment and recognizing the reasons behind someone else’s thoughts or actions.
Being open and honest builds trust – Leaders don’t need to have all the answers. Sharing what you know and what you don’t know creates safety for others to do the same. When people see honesty and openness in leaders, they feel safer to share ideas and speak up.
Curiosity beats certainty – Acting like you know everything can shut down communication and new ideas. When leaders and team members approach conversations with curiosity, asking questions and wanting to understand, it allows for more creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration.
Creating space for honest dialogue matters – Whether it’s about returning to the office, working from home, or DEI initiatives, people need safe spaces to share different perspectives without fear of being judged or labeled. When leaders make room for openness, organizations grow stronger.
Belonging often outweighs being right – People carry their core values, beliefs, and the influence of their communities into every interaction. In polarized or diverse environments, individuals may defend their views to maintain connection and avoid exclusion. Understanding this helps leaders and teams create space for dialogue without forcing agreement, focusing on empathy and connection over “winning” an argument.
Active listening can prevent conflict – Taking the time to really hear someone’s point of view, including the feelings behind it, can stop misunderstandings before they start. Listening with care helps create stronger connections and better solutions.
Curiosity uncovers common ground – By listening to understand, leaders and team members can discover shared core values, even when backgrounds, beliefs, and expressions differ. Recognizing these commonalities fosters connection and belonging, while also clarifying when values diverge, allowing thoughtful decisions about next steps without forcing agreement.
Helpful Resources:
Align values with actions – Organizations and leaders must ensure that the values they promote are reflected in daily practice. When stated values differ from actions, trust erodes and talent may feel disconnected. Revisiting and reassessing values regularly ensures they remain relevant to changing culture, technology, and community needs.
Lead with curiosity and appreciation – The way you show up in personal and professional relationships shapes connection and trust. In families, take time to listen and understand your children or partners, focusing on what matters to them and revisiting shared values.
See, listen, and connect with curiosity – Everyone wants to be seen, heard, and validated. By asking about someone’s background and beliefs, you create space for understanding and connection. Practicing curiosity at home and at work helps build empathy, opens opportunities for mutual learning, and often reveals that people are not as different as they seem.

Behind Harmful Communication: How Silence and Ghosting Activates Trauma
Monday Oct 20, 2025
Monday Oct 20, 2025
In this episode, we explore the impact of silence in communication and how it can shape trust, safety, and connection. We examine why ghosting or withholding responses can reopen old wounds, how silence can be used to control, and the unintentional harm it can cause. Tune in as we share practical ways to close communication gaps, set boundaries with confidence, and create relationships built on clarity, respect, and understanding.
Key Takeaways:
Communication Is Always Happening – Every word spoken or left unsaid, every action taken or avoided, sends a message to others. Even silence or absence communicates feelings and intentions. People constantly read these signals, so being mindful of all forms of communication is essential for healthy relationships.
Silence Can Be Weaponized – Withholding communication deliberately to punish, manipulate, or control someone acts as emotional abuse. Silent treatment damages trust, causes confusion, and often reactivates past traumas linked to neglect or rejection.
Clear Communication About Boundaries Is Crucial – Honestly stating your needs demonstrates emotional maturity and respect for both parties. Clear, direct communication prevents misunderstandings and allows everyone involved to process the situation healthily.
Avoiding Conflict by Ghosting Hurts Everyone – Disappearing to avoid uncomfortable conversations only causes more pain and confusion. Facing conflict directly through honest dialogue builds trust and strengthens relationships, even when the conversations are difficult.
Helpful Resources:
The Problem with “I’ll Call You Back” and Silence – People often say they’ll call back but don’t, leaving others confused and hurt. Simply saying “I need to go” avoids false hopes. While quick responses aren’t always possible, a reply within 24 hours shows respect. If a message was missed, apologizing and responding helps restore trust.
Acknowledge and Close Communication Gaps – If you miss a message or delay a response, owning that oversight and apologizing restores trust. Following up thoughtfully signals that you value the relationship and are committed to clear, respectful communication.

Beyond the "What if" - Thriving Through the Storm with Dr. Shirley Davis
Monday Oct 13, 2025
Monday Oct 13, 2025
In this episode with Dr. Shirley Davis, we explore the “what ifs” that hold us back and the storms that challenge us. We unpack how fear, self-doubt, and disempowering beliefs can keep us stuck in our careers, relationships, and personal growth. Tune in as we discuss how to reframe those fears, honor your emotions, and shift your mindset from surviving to thriving.
Key Takeaways:
Fear-Filled “What Ifs” Can Hold Us Back – Sometimes our minds create scenarios of failure and rejection before we even take the first step. These imagined outcomes feed fear, shrink our confidence, and keep us from moving forward.
Flipping the Script Unlocks Possibility – The fears that once held us back can be transformed into reminders of our strength and potential. By intentionally shifting our inner dialogue to focus on growth and opportunity, we begin to see challenges as preparation for greater impact.
The Brain Filters What We Focus On – Our minds are wired to find evidence that matches what we believe. When fear or negativity dominates our thoughts, the world reflects that back to us. But when we practice gratitude and reflection, our brains begin to notice the good, the progress, and the possibilities around us.
Reinvention Requires Naming and Normalizing Emotions – Transformation begins with being honest about our feelings. Acknowledging fear, doubt, or overwhelm removes their power and shows they are a normal part of being human. From there, we gain the clarity and strength to heal and move forward.
Thriving Means Choosing Resilience Over Fear – Thriving isn’t about avoiding storms, but learning to rise through them. It’s about replacing fear with faith, staying connected to your purpose, and showing up authentically. True growth comes from trusting your gifts and stepping into the impact you were meant to make.
Practice Over Perfection Builds Momentum – Growth comes from action, not flawless execution. Recognizing when we stumble, naming it, and reframing it allows us to move forward with clarity and purpose. Each step, even imperfect, is progress toward what’s possible.
Failure is a Guide, Not a Threat – Mistakes are opportunities to learn and recalibrate. When we fail fast and fail forward, we gain insight, build resilience, and discover the right path. Fear of failure only keeps us from trying but courage grows when we trust the process.
Helpful Resources:
Build Your Circle Wisely – The people we surround ourselves with shape our growth. Supportive, empowering communities challenge us, hold us accountable, and remind us of our potential. Minimizing harmful voices allows space for encouragement and expansion.
Faith and Belief Keep Us Moving – Holding a vision with belief and taking consistent action toward it allows growth to unfold. Having faith, whether in yourself, a higher power, or the journey itself, helps focus your mind, strengthens your resolve, and gives you the courage to keep going.
Step Into Your Greatness – Overthinking and self-doubt can hold us back, but recognizing our worth and acting boldly unlocks potential. Success grows when we focus on what we can create, not what might go wrong.
Take Risks and Grow Your Wings – Reinvention requires movement. Life is never perfect, but when we leap, trusting in our abilities and learning along the way, we expand our capacity and avoid the regret of staying stagnant.

Episode 75: Behind The Knowing-Doing Gap with Kgomotso Sekhute
Monday Oct 06, 2025
Monday Oct 06, 2025
In this episode, we explore the internal voices that shape how we lead, live, and grow. We unpack why there's often a gap between what we know and what we actually do and how limiting beliefs, past experiences, and fixed identities keep us stuck. Tune in as we discuss the power of turning down the voices that hold us back, turning up the ones that move us forward, and learning to lead with more clarity, awareness, and intention.
Key Takeaways:
Closing the Knowing-Doing Gap Starts with Self-Honesty – Having knowledge isn’t enough, it only becomes powerful when it’s applied. The gap between knowing and doing is often filled with unseen barriers like limiting beliefs, outdated habits, and unhelpful thinking patterns.
Unhealed Work Trauma Can Shape How We Show Up – When we carry past experiences of unhealthy work environments, we may enter new spaces feeling guarded or disconnected. This makes it harder to trust others, build real connections, and feel safe enough to grow.
Our Whole Stories Shape How We Show Up – The way we grew up and what we believe can affect how we act at work and in life. If we carry old hurts or fears, it can make it hard to trust others. But when we feel safe, we can connect better and let go of past pain.
Awareness and Neuroplasticity Help Close the Gap – We all have natural ways of thinking and focusing, but relying too much on one style can limit growth. By intentionally practicing new ways of thinking and embracing different perspectives, we can reshape our brains and approach challenges more creatively. Surrounding ourselves with diverse thinkers helps us see problems in new ways and find better solutions.
Helpful Resource:
Fixed Mindsets and Growth Mindsets – When we strongly identify with fixed ideas about ourselves, we close off opportunities to learn and change. Holding our identity lightly, seeing ourselves as “work in progress,” creates space for growth, mistakes, and new possibilities.
We Control Which Voices We Listen To – Throughout life, we carry many voices from family, culture, and experience. Some help us grow, while others hold us back. The power lies in choosing which voices to turn up and which to mute, so we can move forward with confidence and purpose.
Skills and Habits Bridge the Knowing-Doing Gap – Knowing what to do isn’t enough if we don’t have the skills or habits to put it into practice consistently. Especially in communication, learning how to express ourselves with clarity and compassion helps keep conversations open and effective.

Episode 74: Behind Focus: Taming the Undisciplined Mind
Monday Sep 29, 2025
Monday Sep 29, 2025
In this episode, I invite you to explore what it really means to train your focus. Using a simple yoga moment as a starting point, we’ll talk about how everyday distractions, both big and small, can pull us away from what matters most. You’ll learn how to recognize when your mind starts to wander, how to gently bring it back, and how to build the discipline that helps you stay present, productive, and at peace. Tune in as we unpack practical tools to help you strengthen your attention, reduce mental clutter, and create more space for clarity.
Key Takeaways:
Focus Starts With You - Before you can stay focused on tasks or goals, you have to learn how to guide your own mind. That means being honest about what distracts you and choosing to stay present even when it's hard.
Perfectionism Is a Distraction in Disguise - It’s easy to believe we need everything “just right” before we can focus. But the need to fix what’s imperfect can pull us further from the task that really matters. Letting go of that urge is where real mental clarity begins.
The Real Discipline is Mental - Physical practices like yoga can teach us about mental discipline. The goal isn't just to hold a posture, but to stay present and focused even when something is bothering us. It's about resisting the urge to fix every minor imperfection and instead training the mind to stay anchored in the moment.
Let Things Be - Sometimes the best practice is doing nothing. Instead of rushing to fix every little annoyance, we learn to allow things to remain as they are. This builds inner calm and strengthens our ability to stay centered, even when things aren’t perfect.
Train Your Brain to Come Back to Focus - Everyone gets distracted. What matters is your ability to notice when it happens and gently bring your mind back to the task. Just like a muscle, the more you train your focus, the stronger it becomes.
Helpful Resources:
Recognize Your Mental Patterns - The more aware you are of your typical distraction triggers, the better you can prepare for them.
Discipline is a Choice - Staying focused is not always easy, but it is something you can choose. You can choose to notice, pause, and redirect your mind. It may take practice, but each time you make that choice, you’re strengthening your self-discipline and building mental resilience.
Communication and Focus Go Hand-in-Hand - Whether you’re leading a team, having a personal conversation, or showing up for your family, a focused mind helps you communicate more clearly and connect more deeply. When your attention is fully present, people feel seen, heard, and respected.

Monday Sep 22, 2025
Monday Sep 22, 2025
In this episode with LaTerrica Moore, you’ll learn about emotional intelligence and why it matters in everyday life. We talk about how emotions affect the way we work, lead, and show up in our families. You’ll learn the difference between culture and climate in the workplace, why psychological safety matters, and how emotional honesty can improve both personal and professional relationships. This episode will help you understand your emotions better, respond instead of react, and create spaces where others feel seen and valued.
Key Takeaways:
Human Resources Means More Than a Job Title – Human resources is not just a department in an organization. It is about real people and the support they need to thrive. The word “human” refers to the people with their emotions, values, life experiences, and dreams. The “resources” are the tools, support systems, and access they need to do well both professionally and personally.
Emotional Intelligence Is Essential in the Workplace – Emotional intelligence helps people understand their own feelings and the feelings of others. In human resources, EQ is important because it creates an environment where employees feel safe, respected, and valued not only as workers but also as whole people.
Psychological Safety Is Part of Emotional Intelligence – Psychological safety means that people feel comfortable to speak up, share their ideas, or make mistakes without fear of punishment or judgment. This safety is a vital part of building emotional intelligence into how an organization works.
Culture and Climate Are Different but Connected – Culture refers to the values, traditions, and beliefs an organization or group says it holds. Climate is how people actually feel when they interact with that culture. For example, a company may say it values diversity, but if employees feel like just a number, the climate does not reflect the culture.
Intentions Do Not Always Match Impact – Good intentions alone do not guarantee positive results. What matters most is how people experience those intentions. Being aware of how words and actions affect others is an important part of emotional intelligence.
Understanding Emotions Inside and Around You – Emotional intelligence is about noticing and understanding emotions in other people and also recognizing what you feel inside yourself. It’s important to separate your feelings from others' so you don’t carry their emotions as your own.
Helpful Resources:
Emotional Honesty and Regulation Matter – It’s important to acknowledge your feelings rather than suppressing them. Emotional regulation means finding ways to manage your emotions so you can communicate calmly and effectively, even when you’re upset.
Emotional Expression Should Not Lead to Harmful Behavior – Having emotional intelligence and being trauma-informed doesn’t mean ignoring rules or boundaries. It’s okay to express emotions, but emotional intelligence includes knowing where emotions end and harmful actions begin. Managing this helps maintain respect and healthy interactions at work and home.
Love Is the Foundation of Psychological Safety – Psychological safety at work or at home means people feel safe to be themselves without fear of judgment or punishment. That kind of safety comes from love, expressed through empathy, care, honesty, and support.

In this episode, Dr. Shaq Anthony joins the conversation to explore the powerful question: What does it feel like to be on the other side of you? Together, we dive into the importance of understanding intention versus impact, creating space for curiosity and conversation, and leading yourself before leading others. This heartfelt discussion reminds us that leadership starts with self-awareness and how we show up in all areas of life.
Key Takeaways:
The First Person You Lead Is You – Leadership isn't just about having a team or holding a title. It starts with how you lead yourself, your choices, your habits, and your discipline. Before you can guide others, you have to be honest about how you show up in your own life. Self-leadership is the foundation for every other kind of leadership.
What Does It Feel Like to Be Around You? – This simple question invites you to see yourself through the eyes of those who love you. It’s a gentle reminder to be more present, more giving, and more thoughtful even in the little things.
Don’t Just Correct, Celebrate Too – It’s easy to point out what needs fixing, but growth also comes from being seen and celebrated. Acknowledging the good, especially in kids, builds confidence, encourages effort, and reminds them they’re more than just a work in progress.
Make Room for Curiosity – Curiosity is a bridge to growth. When we slow down and make space for questions, we invite deeper connection, learning, and trust. Quick answers may solve a moment, but thoughtful conversations shape a lifetime.
Intent vs. Impact – We judge ourselves by our intentions but others experience us through our impact. If how you meant it doesn’t match how it landed, it’s the impact that needs care. True growth comes from asking, “How did that make you feel?” and being willing to adjust, not just explain.
Embrace Feedback as a Gift – Feedback isn’t criticism but a chance to see ourselves clearly and improve. When given kindly and at the right time, feedback helps us grow from good to great. Creating a culture where feedback is welcomed helps everyone become their best selves.
Helpful Resource:
Trust Is the Foundation of Success – Trust is the key that unlocks strong relationships and effective teamwork. Without it, feedback is hard to give, and collaboration falls apart. Whether at work or home, building trust creates the safety and connection needed to achieve real growth and success.
Trust Grows When We Act on What We Hear – Listening isn’t just hearing words, it’s about showing you care by taking action. When people share their struggles, they’re trusting you with something precious. Responding by making real changes shows you value them and builds lasting trust. Without action, listening alone can break trust and silence voices.
Awareness Shapes Your Impact – The way people experience you is tied to the impact you leave in their lives. Becoming aware of how you show up, especially on tough days, builds stronger self-leadership and better relationships.

Episode 71: Behind The Contraints That Influence Our Listening & Speaking
Monday Sep 08, 2025
Monday Sep 08, 2025
In this episode, we explore the three powerful constraints that shape every conversation we have: the neurological, the social, and the individual. I’ll walk you through how each constraint functions, why they matter, and how recognizing them can transform everyday communication. If you’ve ever struggled to feel heard or misunderstood by others, this conversation will give you the insight and tools to shift those patterns for yourself, your relationships, and your leadership.
Key Takeaways:
Filters Shape the Way We Communicate - Every conversation runs through filters, how we hear, see, and process what’s happening. Understanding these filters helps us become more aware of how we respond and how others might be experiencing the same moment differently.
Neurological Constraint: What Our Bodies Can Sense - Our senses have limits. We only hear, see, or feel what our nervous system allows. Just because something isn’t noticed doesn’t mean it isn’t there. This helps us stay compassionate when someone misses something we find obvious.
Social Constraint: What We Were Taught Growing Up - Our social environments teach us rules—some spoken, some unspoken. These shape how we interact. When we step into new spaces, these old patterns can limit us unless we choose to grow past them.
Individual Constraint: What We’ve Personally Lived - No two people experience life the same way. Even when we share a moment, we bring different memories, histories, and emotions. Recognizing this can help us stop expecting people to “just get it.”
Helpful Resource:
Misunderstanding Comes from Unseen Limits - Most conflict doesn’t come from bad intentions—it comes from invisible limits. Being unaware of our own or others’ filters can lead to assumptions, miscommunication, or tension.
Conscious Communication Builds Bridges - When we pause to ask, clarify, and really listen, we open up space for better conversations. This level of communication helps us resolve conflict, reduce misunderstandings, and build stronger trust.
Practice Naming Your Filters in Real Time - Start noticing your own reactions. Say to yourself—or even out loud—what’s coming up: “This feels like a survival response,” or “I’m reacting based on my past.” Naming it gives you power to choose a better path forward.
Notable Highlights:
“If we're going to expand our capacity to be flexible in our communication, we need to understand the mechanism that goes on so that we can interrupt it.”
“Sometimes error in communication is due to lack of awareness, and sometimes it’s due to lack of access to our internal resources at the time.”
